The NFHS put together a rules interpretation video for all lacrosse officials, coaches, and players. This video was shown during the last day of training to all of the GLOA officials who were present. If you were unable to view the video during training please make time to watch it. It clearly explains all of the new rules for 2011 with examples of what should and should not be called.

As always if you do have a question about the rules please contact Ryan Rowe, at rules@galaxref.com.

Unfortunately, uploading restrictions prevent us from showing the video directly on galaxref.com. To view the video please visit this link: http://vimeo.com/19718486

Subject: 2011 Boys Lacrosse Rules Book and Exam Corrections

Date: March 11, 2011

Two additional items have come to our attention with regard to the 2011 NFHS Boys Lacrosse Rules Book and exam.

Situation and Ruling 1.10.1 on page 17 was not updated to reflect the revision in rule 1-10-1b. The revised wording for that situation and ruling follows:
1.10.1 SITUATION: Prior to the game, the Team B coach requests the referee to examine a  cast/splint on the forearm of one of his players. The protective item has “hard” material, but is covered with at least ½-inch thick, closed-cell, slow-recovery foam padding. The coach: (a) provides; or (b) does not provide, written authorization from an appropriate health-care professional directing the use of the cast/splint as necessary to protect an injury. RULING: In both (a) and (b), the cast/splint may be worn during the game. A letter from an appropriate health-care professional is not required.

2. Question number 19 on the 2011 NFHS Boys Lacrosse Rules Exam incorrectly lists the answer as A, true. The correct answer is actually B, false. The question with the correct answer follows:

19. A player who accumulates five fouls of any kind is disqualified from the game.

Answer:  False

Rule Reference:

Page 54, Rule 5 Section 10 Fouling Out

Any player who accumulates five personal fouls, regardless of the penalty time accrued, shall be disqualified from the game.

We apologize for the errors.

If you are interested in reading up on the 2011 Boys Lacrosse Rules Changes from the NFHS please follow this link. There are several major rule changes and major editorial changes. The rules committee has firmly focused in on excessive/flagrant body contact to the head or a downed opponent as well as making our lives easier in the pre-game. For instance, “The pregame equipment certification by the head coach shall act as the team warning. The head coach shall certify to the referee before the game that all players are legally equipped by rule. Note: ‘a’ through ‘e’ can be covered by the referee asking the head coach: ‘Coach, are all your players legally equipped by rule?’” Now our pre-game certification is abbreviated by rule!

Hopefully this information is useful to everyone. If you are interested in getting a copy of the 2011 Boys Lacrosse Rulebook I would highly recommend registering with the NFHS and paying an officials fee. You can download the pdf anywhere you need to. I downloaded last year’s onto my phone, which was great during Fall Ball if I ever forgot my rule book.

Cheers,
Gordon
