2013 Ron Mallonee Lacrosse Camp Scholarship

The Georgia Lacrosse Officials Association (GLOA) is proud to announce the 2013 Ron Mallonee Scholarship winners. The Ron Mallonee Scholarship is awarded each May to a select group of deserving Georgia high school boys. These scholarships allow these young men to attend the Georgia Tech Lacrosse summer camp where they can continue to learn and improve their skills.

A veteran lacrosse official in Georgia, Ron was a Charter Member of the association who passed away in 2004 after a brief battle with cancer. Long-time Atlanta lacrosse fans who met Ron undoubtedly remember his unique passion for the sport of lacrosse. His presence was welcomed on the field by coaches, officials, and players due to his outgoing nature, his enthusiasm, and his friendly demeanor.

Veteran Club Player Jon Ochsner recalled how unique Ron was. “Ron officiated our men’s club games by himself, which is unheard of today. He understood the flow of the game very well and always called a safe and fair club game. He always made a point to get to know all of us club players off the field.”

In his memory, GLOA created the Ron Mallonee Fund which annually awards camp scholarships to deserving high school boys who have a passion for the sport of lacrosse and a desire to improve. Since the Ron Mallonee Fund’s inception in 2005, GLOA has been able to provide scholarships to over fifty players from the state of Georgia to attend lacrosse camp.

The eleven Ron Mallonee Scholarship winners for 2013 are as follows:

Charles Ficklin III (Southwest Dekalb High School)
Russell Gardner (Collins Hill High School)
Will Hutto (Lakeside Evans High School)

Iain Robins (Grady High School)
Tyler Stridiron (Southwest Dekalb High School)
Roman Tavani (Collins Hill High School)
Tre Tice (Decatur High School)

These eleven players were all nominated by their high school coaches and will receive their award at halftime of one of the two GHSA Lacrosse State Championship Games played this weekend.

Results of GLOA Officiating Survey

To All Coaches, Contacts, and Officials:

We want to share the results of the survey we conducted recently. A special thanks to GordonCorsetti and the GLOA Board of Directors for spearheading this effort to systematically and reliably get feedback on perceptions of lacrosse officiating in Georgia. We will use this data to inform our training, and we will continue to look for ways to get good information to help us continue to improve. I am not aware of any other group of officials in the state using reliable metrics like this to try to raise the level of play and of officiating, and I am looking forward to continuing to pursue the highest levels of professionalism, consistency, and excellence possible.

After reading the summary, one of the GLOA officials commented that he had the opportunity to meet Coach John Danowski from Duke recently. He asked him what his number one priority is when he evaluates the officials assigned to ref the Blue Devils. Coach Danowski told him that consistency is the number one concern for him. Both coaches and officials indicated the same thing in the GLOA survey.

GLOA Officials Represent at LAREDOs

Since the late 1980s, the LAREDO (LAcrosse REferee DevelOpment) program has been providing training for lacrosse officials around the country.

Originally designed to teach 3-man mechanics to officials in the western United States at events like the Vail Lacrosse Shootout and the Texas A&M fall ball tournament, the program has now spread across the U.S.

LAREDO utilizes regional lacrosse tournaments and summer lacrosse camps as sites for intense and concentrated lacrosse officiating development. The philosophy behind the LAREDO program is to make these clinics accessible to all lacrosse officials from around the country. This balanced representation enables officials from developing and established areas to polish their officiating skills under the instruction of a qualified trainer.

The GLOA is proud to recognize four officials who will be attending various LAREDOs across the country this summer:

Kurt Trampel

2012 NFHS Boys’ Rules Clarifications

US Lacrosse has received two sets of clarifications and corrections to the rules for high school boys’ lacrosse in 2012 from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

These rules clarifications provide clarity around Rule 7-1-1d, regarding a player releasing from a penalty during a face-off; Rule 1.6.1, regarding equipment (stick) checks and taped ends; and Rule 4-15, regarding bringing the ball into the attack area.

Officials are encouraged to review these rule clarifications carefully.

The following is an additional clarification to the 2012 NFHS Boys Lacrosse Rules Book:

The 2012 revision to rule 1-7-3 is stated as follows:

All hollow crosse handles must have their open end covered with a plastic or rubber end cap manufactured for a lacrosse stick.

When the rules committee adopted that language, it was believed that plastic and rubber were the only two materials used in the production of lacrosse end caps. It has since been determined that end caps are manufactured for use on a hollow stick using wood. As a result, the rule is further revised for the 2012 season as follows:

All hollow crosse handles must have their open end covered with an end cap manufactured for a lacrosse stick.

US Lacrosse 2012 National Convention

US Lacrosse welcomes lacrosse coaches, officials and administrators at all levels to register for the 2012 US Lacrosse National Convention, set for Jan. 13-15 in Philadelphia. The convention is annually the largest professional development and networking event in the lacrosse world. Registration pricing is $80 before Nov. 11, $105 from Nov. 12-Dec. 28, and $150 onsite at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has released a press release outlining the 2012 Boys Lacrosse Rules Changes at http://www.nfhs.org/content.aspx?id=5604.
